The co-host organizations of the 2011 Canadian Injury Prevention & Safety Promotion Conference would like to recognize the outstanding work of individuals and groups who are working to prevent injury.  Nominations will be accepted for awards in Leadership, Innovation, Advocacy, and Research.  Nominations close on September 30, 2011.  Please see below for more details.

CCCIP Award for Collaborative Excellence

The Canadian Collaborating Centres for Injury Prevention Award for Collaborative Excellence is a new award which will be presented every second year at the Canadian Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion Conference. This award will recognize and celebrate the value and power of collaboration as the keystone of effective Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion practice in Canada.

The CCCIP Award for Collaborative Excellence will recognize a Collaborative that has systematically identified a significant injury challenge, that has recognized that the best approach for addressing that challenge is a collaborative one, that has worked together effectively to address it.

Call for Abstracts

The Canadian Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion Conference Program Committee invites you to submit abstracts for the 2011 Conference to be held Nov. 16 – 18, 2011, at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver, B.C.  This national event is being co-hosted by Safe Communities Canada, Safe Kids Canada, SMARTRISK, ThinkFirst Canada and the Canadian Red Cross. Designed to build on the previous successful conferences held in 2003, 2005 and 2007, the 2011 conference will focus on leadership, capacity building and networking for community workers, health care providers, emergency services personnel, researchers, evaluators, planners and policy makers at the municipal, regional, provincial/territorial and national levels.

Submissions are encouraged from a wide range of sectors, including community groups, social service organizations, education, justice, health, transport, recreation, sport, Aboriginal organizations, non-governmental organizations, government, industry and academia.

Presenters/authors have the opportunity to submit their abstracts as:

  • Attendee poster presentations: accepted posters will be in place for the entire conference and poster presenters must stand by their posters during the attended session times.  Poster presenters will be provided with a free-standing 4 x 4 (length x height) poster board as well as Velcro/pins to affix the presentations.  Audio-visual or tables will not be provided.
  • Oral presentations: (10-15 minute presentations with an additional 5 minutes for question & answer).
  • PechaKucha 20x20 format:  PechaKucha 20x20 is a simple presentation format where you show 20 slides, each for 20 seconds (total: 6 min and 40 sec). The images forward automatically and you talk along to the images. Presentations will be grouped within a larger session with similar topics/interests.
  • Workshops/breakout sessions: (60 – 90 minutes in length, including question and answer).

Submission Process

All abstracts are to be submitted online through the online submission site. Authors should prepare their abstracts in Word or some other word processing or text editing program. Please do not use presentation software such as PowerPoint. Abstracts are accepted only in English, and must not exceed 400 words, not including authors or title. Tables are allowed where required, but should be kept as concise as possible.

Subjects

Submitters will be asked to select the subject which best fits their abstract. The available subjects are listed  below. The Scientific Committee reserves the right to move abstracts to other subjects as they see fit, and to add and remove subjects as required.

  • Front-line workers, including community workers, police and others

Does your research include Aboriginal people?

  • If yes, does it conform to Ownership, Control, Access and Possession (OCAP) principles?

Does your abstract focus on any specific population? 

  • Children
  • Youth
  • Adults 
  • Older adults
  • All ages

Does your abstract deal with a specific mechanism of injury?

  • Falls
  • Motor vehicle crashes
  • Sports 
  • Other

Does your abstract contribute to the evidence around injury prevention (e.g., program evaluation, systematic review)?

Does your abstract include interventions related to social media?

Submission Deadline

Abstracts must be submitted by 5 p.m. PDT on April 30, 2011.

Review Notices

Review results are expected to be sent by email on or before June 30, 2011.  Review notices will be sent to the submitting author. Subsequent communications will be sent to the presenting author.

Authorization to Publish

Submission of the abstract constitutes permission for the conference organizers to publish the abstracts in either printed or electronic format.

Conflict of Interest

We ask authors to identify any significant conflicts of interest and all outside funding sources.
